Back on Episode 33, published on 30 December 2024, Garry Taylor and Tim Cottingham, had a chat about what happened 50 years ago. It was the day Aston Martin went into voluntary liquidation, and it felt like the end for them.
Richard Dix reached out to us after that podcast was published. He worked at Newport Pagnell back then and shared this interesting story: “I was taken away by the police from the Socialist Workers demonstrators and safely tucked away in the cinema about 50 years ago. The staff or those around me had no idea about the closure until they arrived and found demonstrators and the press waiting for them.”
We had a new insight that we thought would be really interesting to follow up Ep 33, so we invited Richard onto this podcast. He shared some personal stories about working at Newport Pagnell and, of course, that incredible day and how it impacted him and the whole team.
Even initially he had a bit of a grudge against Aston Martin for some years, he couldn’t resist the pull of the brand again. He still remembers the joy he felt when he bought a DB5 for just £350 and later a Gaydon V8 Vantage.
We’re thrilled to have Richard sharing his incredible story, as “I was there!”
