This is a truly special episode, drawn from a rare archive recording made in 1992. In that year, renowned motoring author Jonathan Wood interviewed Ted Cutting as part of his research for one of his many respected publications.
Ted Cutting’s career at Aston Martin Lagonda spanned from 1955 to 1963, a formative period for the marque. During that time, he rose to become Chief Racing Engineer, working on some of Aston Martin’s most significant competition cars, including the DB3, DB3S, DBR1 and DBR4. His influence also extended to the Lagonda V12 programme and key developments in Aston Martin road cars.
In this conversation, Ted reflects on his early career, how he came to join Aston Martin, and the people and projects that shaped his time there. Along the way, he recalls working with legendary figures such as John Wyer, Claude Hill, Frank Feeley and David Brown, offering a fascinating first-hand insight into a golden era of British motorsport engineering.
The original recordings were kindly supplied by the Michael Sedgwick Memorial Trust, to whom we are extremely grateful. Originally captured on cassette tape, the audio was not intended for broadcast and features abrupt starts and finishes. However, modern audio restoration has allowed us to present this historic material in a clear and engaging format.
This conversation is presented across two podcasts. This one focuses on Ted’s early career, his arrival at Aston Martin Lagonda, and his work on projects including the DB2 and DB3.
